Title of Training Module Design Plan Charlie Howard July 22, 2010 EDTC 3332 Instructional Technology Practicum
Needs Assessment: Description of Problem or Opportunity: • Teachers are sending students to office for discipline concerns without applying suggested preventive plan causing increase in written discipline referrals. • Teachers fail to follow school’s plan of action prior to referring students to office for discipline. State not satisfied with large amount of written referrals.
Needs Assessment: Analysis of the gap between what is available and what should be available • The gap is that students challenge the school’s disciplinary system to test limits while teachers fail to apply school’s disciplinary protocol accordingly. • Teachers need to become familiar with the school’s plan of action on how to properly approach and implement discipline concerns.
Needs Assessment: Recommended solution for filling the gap • Construct a web-based training module which will instruct educators on how to properly handle discipline issues in the classroom and when to send students to the front office for disciplinary issues.
Instructional Goal: • After completing this training, all educators will be able to manage discipline in the classroom according to the school’s disciplinary protocol. • All teachers will gain a better understanding about controlling discipline in the classroom which will lower disciplinary referrals to the office.
Performance Objectives: Learners will be able to: • Upon completing an online discipline survey questionnaire, educators will assist trainers in identifying in class disciplinary occurrences. • After completing an online discipline exam, educators will become more familiar in identifying and handling discipline issues in the classroom and when to generate a discipline office referral.
Learner Characteristics: • 45 Employees. School Teachers, Special Services and Paraprofessional educators are included.
Learning Context: Intended Instructional Setting • The intended instructional setting will be a computer lab. The lab will provide computers so that educators can complete their surveys and exams. • All educators will have access to a web-based training module via internet. The “in class” discipline training module for educators can be accessed whenever and where ever the individual desires which makes this training module a just-in-time training.
Instructional Strategies: Written disciplinary referrals at my work place have gotten out of control and the State has requested that the District improve the amount of written referrals immediately. To many educators are taking discipline concerns into their own hands by simply sending students to the front office with a referral prior to attempting to handle the situation in the classroom. Other educators are somewhat new and are not familiar with the school’s disciplinary protocol. A web-based training module will be conducted which will grasp the educators attention of how severe the situation has gotten and what is expected. Educators will have the ability to review the presented data after this training is completed for further referencing via internet as a web-based training module.
Instructional Strategies: Handling Disciplinary Referrals as per School Policy (a) Computerized lab will allow educators to access a survey and exam via internet. (b) The goal of this training is to assist our educators to better understand what the State and District expect concerning discipline control. The objective of this training is to reduce the amount of discipline referrals for the current year (2010). (c) The training session will be held in a computerized lab which will allow educators to access a survey and an exam via internet. These tools will allow the instructors to better understand what educators are experiencing inside the classroom and where improvement needs to be addressed. The goal of this training is to assist our educators to better understand what the State and District expect concerning discipline control. The objective of this training is to reduce the amount ofdiscipline referrals for the current year (2010). The State and District has compared this year’s (2010) disciplinary referrals record with previous years and wants the educators to view them.
Instructional Strategies: • How will we gain the teachers attention? • (a) Demonstrate State and District’s Concerns. • 1. District not satisfied with the amount of referrals • 2. District wants discipline referrals handled accordingly • 3. Principle and facilitator need to see improvements • (b) Goals and Objectives • 1. Handle disciplinary issues according to school policy • 2. Reduce the number of disciplinary referrals • (c) Lesson Module • 1. How to identify a disciplinary problem • 2. How to control students when a problem arises • 3. Follow the school’s disciplinary policy accordingly
Instructional Strategies: (2) Presentation of Information (a) Training Module 1. This training module is intended to assist teachers on how to properly identify and correct a disciplinary issue in the classroom prior to sending students to the office. A step by step guide module will be implemented to guide teachers and will be offered online as a web-based training module after this training has concluded. The web-based training module can be used for further training.
Instructional Strategies: (2)Presentation of Information Cont. (b) Module Content 1. Welcome teachers to training session 2. Introduce State and District’s concerns 3. Explain training module process to educators 4. Have teachers log onto computers and complete survey 5. Go over survey results with administration then educators 6. Log onto computers and complete disciplinary exam 7. Go over test results with administration then educators 8. Reintroduce school’s disciplinary plan to educators
Instructional Strategies: (2)Presentation of Information Cont. (b) Module Content 9. Reintroduce classroom disciplinary plan to educators 1. Proactive rules of the classroom 2. Verbal warning (use color codes system) 3. Send a letter home 4. Call home 5. Refer student to school counselor 6. Write a disciplinary referral to office
Instructional Strategies: The results from both the survey and exam will be documented and used for measuring the teachers progress. Teachers should be able to increase their knowledge, skills and understanding concerning disciplinary policies.
Instructional Resources: The following resources will be used to carry out the design Plan: 1) Computer Lab with Internet access – Computers and internet will allow educators to take survey & exam online. 2) Survey – Disciplinary questions will be asked (fill in the blank & choose the following). Survey will assist instructors in better understanding what teachers know and do not know about disciplinary issues. 3) Test – Disciplinary questions will be asked (fill in the blank & multiple choice). This exam will assist instructors in better understanding what educators have failed to understand concerning disciplinary issues. 4) Digital Audio Recorder with Microphone – The digital audio recorder will be used to record the educators comments or responses to the disciplinary session training. Comments made will be used for further training and/or improvements.

Formative Evaluation: Formative Evaluation Plan: Strategy 1: Small Group Evaluation. The forty five (45) employees will be divided into five (5) groups, each consisting of nine (9) people. One trainer will be in charge of each group. This person is responsible for introducing the materials to the educators. The person will collect the data/results and deliver them to the administrator. The trainers will continue to evaluate the data until it is understood. When administration acknowledges that the number of office referrals has decreased, the step by step plan has improved the goal. Formative Evaluation Plan: Strategy 2: Subject Matter Expert Review. An expert, in this case the Principal and the Facilitator of the school will consult with the trainers. The experts will decide the course of action based on the findings of the survey and exam. Monthly audits will be conducted to evaluate the performance of the educators. The trainers will visit with the educators in their classrooms to review all disciplinary documentations of the students.
Summary The children at my workplace are smart, ambitious and extremely talented, but despite these enormous virtues, some students cause a large amount of problems. Some educators simply do not want to deal with these disciplinary issues and some just don’t know how. Some teachers have decided that the best way to handle the situation is by sending the students to the front office with a disciplinary referral prior to applying the school’s disciplinary plan. The teachers have been instructed by the school in the past to apply in class punishment or consequences, but some do not take this request into consideration. The State has informed the District that to many referrals have been written for the current year and improvements need to take effect immediately. A web-based disciplinary training module is going to be conducted which will involve all teachers from all grade levels. The purpose of the training is to educate the teachers on how to handle discipline in the classroom and when to send a student to the front office with a referral. This training will be available as a web-based training module via internet.
