Introduction • Bio: • B. A. in English and Elementary Education • Masters in Special Education • 6th, 7th, and 8th grade English • 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Math • 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Science • 7th and 8th grade Reading, Special Education • 7th grade Social Studies • Summer School Teacher • Instructional English Coach • Curriculum Writer • Soccer Coach, school and club
What I Learned • It’s all about the learners!
Study Student Work • Follow the instructions on the Protocol Document • Chart responses to discussion questions on the agenda.
What are the components of an effective PLC? • Defined Purpose • Teachers and administration are committed to that purpose. • A leader • Support for the leader • Formative student data • Established norms, (expectations and ways to communicate) • Purposeful, substantive interaction, (Rigorous teacher talk)
Time to Prepare • Go on my blog and look through the posted documents. • There are two actual agendas and the two accompanying minutes. • Also look over the Institute for Learning’s PLC Handbook, (Don’t tell them I put it online for everyone to use. Shhhhh) • After you are done answer this question: Based on your experiences, what do you see as the benefits and trade-offs of PLCs in your current position? • After you answer share you answer with your neighbor.
Whole Group Circle Discussion • Based on your experiences, what do you see as the benefits and trade-offs of PLCs in your current position?
Every Presentation needs a quote that explains everything • “PLCs are effective tools for improving classroom instruction.” Charles Hekman
Acknowledgments • I’d like to thank the IFL for the use of their materials. (Again don’t be a snitch) • I’d also like to thank the IFL for training me to be an instructional English coach. • I wouldn’t be good at my job without the fabulous teachers at G. Ford. Thank you for putting your faith in me. • Thanks to my new friends at the LMWP for giving me 75 minutes today, and thanks for not falling asleep.
