Ecosystems:A Closer Look By Mr. Nathan Steier
Our beautiful planet Our Earth is very rare. It is one-of-a-kind in our solar system and even in our galaxy. It is for that reason that we have to ask the question: WHY??? Why is it that life can exist on Earth? What makes it and every living thing on it so special? Take one minute to talk to a friend to see if either of you have any guesses!
The Big Reasons: • 1. Our Sun: • With our position to the sun we owe a great deal to how lucky planet Earth is.
2: The Earth’s Atmosphere. With several layers of varying amounts of oxygen, nitrogen, and other elements we are able to owe it a lot of credit too. • Without it, we wouldn’t have: • Air to breathe. • Protection from dangerous rays from the sun. • A temperature unsuitable for life to exist • Life in general
3: The Tilt of the Earth The Earth doesn’t sit perfectly aligned like you think. There is a 23.5* tilt from the center that makes it perfectly slanted for us to have 4 seasons – Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall. Without this tilt, wherever you lived wouldn’t change all year.
4: Our Moon You may remember that a lot of planets have moons. You may even remember that some planets have A LOT of moons. Ours is pretty special though. As it rotates around the Earth it provides us with a pull on our oceans. This creates different air currents and pressures throughout the entire planet. Those are just a few reasons why Earth is so lucky. With the combination of everything it allows the Earth to have what we call ecosystems.
Ecosytems- What are they again? • An ecosystem is a complex set of relationships among the living resources, habitats, and residents of an area. It includes plants, animals, trees, fish, birds, micro-organisms, water, soil and people. • Tropical Rainforests / Savannas / Deserts / Temperate Grasslands / Tundra / Coniferous Forests / Deciduous Forest
Billings Montana • We live in an ecosystem! What characteristics make Billings so different from any other place to live? For your assignment think about: • The Sun/ temperatures • The seasons given to us from the tilt of the Earth • The atmosphere/ our altitude on the surface of the planet • What do you need to live here?
Your homework: • LIST out 10 characteristics of what it is like to live in Billings Montana. They need to involve why our place on the planet Earth is different then other place. • For your work you can talk to your family, your friends, your teachers, your classmates, or anybody! • This list needs to be on a separate sheet of paper ready to turn in our next class period (for science).
