  1. Ratifying the Constitution Standard 2.4 E.Q.: How did they get the states to join the cause of the new government?

  2. Ratification; WHAT that? • Ratification: official approval • Stated that at least nine states had to ratify the new constitution to have it official. • Federalists: Supporters of the Constitution. • Anti-Federalists: opposed the Constitution.

  3. Anti-Federalists • Anti-Federalists • Concerned with the following: • Single government: could it manage the affairs of a large country. • Afraid to lose the rights of the individual. • Federalists • Supported by merchants, skilled workers, and laborers that benefited a regulated trade.

  4. States opinion • New York would be unsupportive of a more powerful national government because they had greater freedom under the articles • Delaware would be first to ratify the constitution in December of 1787. • New Hampshire would fulfilled the requirement of the ninth state. • Needed Virginia and New York, the biggest states to make this effective.

  5. The Federalist Papers • A series of 85 essays defending the constitution. • Wrote by Alexander Hamilton and James Madison. • Would outline the following: • Protect them against the biggest threat to the US: Faction/protecting the rights of the people against local prejudices but not strong enough to threaten the liberates of the people. • Would help some of the states to shift to ratifying. • !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!THOMASON JEFFFERSON AND James MADISON WOULD SUPPORT RATIFICATION OF THE CONSTITUTION!!!!!!!!!!! • George Washington was unanimously elected.

  6. Bill of Rights? What Is that? • Anti-federalists wanted a written guarantee of: • Speech • Press • Religion. • Demanded assurance of the right to trail by jury and the right to bear arms. • First Amendment was created to protect the citizens against the Federal government.
