DUTIES As critical members of the health care team, mammography technologists explain procedures, prepare patients for tests and treatments, and educate women about the importance of mammography in preventive breast health. Mammography Technicians perform mammograms using low-level radiation and x-ray machines to locate and identify tumors, cysts or lesions within the breasts.
Area of Specialization- DOSIMETRIST Breast Mammography technologists work with the most advanced diagnostic imaging equipment, including digital mammography, which produces images of the breast through computerization rather than x-ray film. Digital mammography provides results that are clear and easy to read.
WORKING ENVIROMENT Most work in a large hospital and Research centers Diagnostic center Physician Offices Usually work 40 hours week
Length of Training • One to Three years at community college and hospital • Many program require attain a degree in X-ray Technician first • Most Mammography Technician degrees come in the form of an Associate of Science in Radiology or Ultrasound Technology, and is the minimal requirement for gaining entry into this career field.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION Certificate is voluntary, but many employers prefer licensure for employment Individual needed to pass a general exam and/or a specialized are area exam To maintain license sonographers must completed accredited CE classes
