Integrating BEN to ORCA Ilia Baldine Renaissance Computing Institute ibaldin@renci.org
BEN Overview • Metro-scale dark-fiber facility • 4 PoPs on campuses (UNC-CH, Duke, NCSU) and RENCI • Power/space/cooling at each PoP (3 racks) • Out-of-band management network • Remote power management
BEN Substrate • Each PoP is equipped with • Polatis fiber switch • Infinera DTN (DWDM) • Cisco 6509 • Blades for VM instatiation

BEN Slicing Future steps • Add drivers for • Polatis fiber switches • DTN platforms • GMPLS (need to peek at TED) • Explicit setup • Use NDL for substrate description and slice specification • Replace ORCA resource model with ontology-based one • Add cross-layer path validation and then computation • VM substrate • Eucalyptus/EC2 • VMWare
