  5. 5th Grade Math Curriculum • Problem Solving and sharing ones thinking • Various methods of solving: area model, Venn Diagrams, numberlines, bar models. • Modeling • Reasonableness of answers – HUGE!!! • Geometry and the Coordinate System • Coordinate graphing, characteristics of 2D shapes • Number Sense • Volume, multiplying with the algorithm • Fractions (18 weeks) HUGE! • Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions and mixed numbers

  13. Homework • Time • CUSD homework policy is 10/night/grade level. Your child should spend around 50 minutes each night on their home-work. If it seems that they are truly trying and are spending far more than the 50 minutes, please arrange a conference to speak with your child’s teacher. • Typical Night: • Math (1 page, more if class work was NOT completed that day) • Reading (Daily 20 minutes minimum + reading log response) • Reader’s Notebook Page • Occasional writing that was not completed in class • Check Assignment Notebooks Daily for Teacher Comments

Homework continued… • Expectations • All homework is to be completed carefully and CHECKED OVER by an adult • Homework reinforces what is being taught in the classroom. • We are trying to prepare them for the middle school workload. • How YOU can help • Support good organization • Provide a QUIET place to study • Provide patient support and assistance if needed • Help your child take PERSONAL PRESPONSIBILITY

THE HIGHEST GRADE THESE FIXED WORKS WILL RECEIVE IS 75% We have the expectation that if your child receives a grade lower than a 72% they show up for tutoring on Tuesday mornings or Thursday after school, if they need the extra support.   16. Organization Students are responsible for keeping their desks, binder, and backpacks organized. Students are responsible for keeping their weekly/monthly planners up to date. Students are responsible for relaying important notices sent by the school to the parents i.e., notice of school events, field trips, permission slips, grade reports, meeting notices, etc. Organization

Student Behavior Expectations • I will always do my best. • I will complete all assignments on time. • I will not use “put downs” or harass others. • I will treat all students & staff with R-E-S-P-E-C-T! • I will respect other people’s differences and opinions. • I will actively listen when others are speaking.

  18. Character Counts • Trustworthiness • Respect • Caring • Responsibly • Fairness • Citizenship • Students received a character card that records their behaviors within the classrooms. Students are allowed to have Fun Friday if their work is completed and they have more positives then infractions.

  19. Classroom Parties We are more that happy to celebrate a student’s special day with the class. Celebrations will be held on the child’s birthday during read aloud time (12:15 -12:45) This is the time where you can bring in something to share with the class. Here are a few things to consider if you plan to bring something in... Here are some suggestions: • COOKIES • POPSICLES • ICE CREAM SANDWICHES • DONUTS • Store bought and easy to pass out

  20. Parent/Teacher Conferences • We would love to meet with you at anytime to discuss any questions or concerns you may have. A conference before or after school is possible only with a twenty-four hour notice. • Please email or call to make an appointment. We will get back to you as soon as we can.

  21. AIMS Reports Please see your child’s homeroom teacher for their scores from last year.

  22. One last thing Mechanical pencils please keep at home.
