  2. Wind • Winds are produced when differential heating of Earth’s surface creates air masses with differing heat contents and densities. • Wind can be used as a source of energy because of the potential that has to move things.

  3. Wind Energy • This source of energy that has been used for thousands of years has many pros and cons. It is an energy source that has many uses that have been changing over the years that it has been used. • The variety of uses include, propelling ships, moving windmills, grinding grain, pumping water and in a greater stage can be used to generate electricity.

  4. Wind Energy • Wind energy today is collected in regions in the world that have strong winds that can move wind turbines. • The propeller on the towering structure is put into movement by the wind that hits it. • When the propeller is moved it puts into motion a generator inside the wind turbine.

  5. Location • Wind turbines are placed in open spaces where there are strong winds. • Oceans, open plains, and mountain passes are places where wind turbines can produce a lot of energy. • The intense winds that pass through these areas are the most reliable.

  6. Wind Energy • Wind turbines are built together, making wind farms. • This produces even more electricity.

  7. Wind Energy • The wind turbines should be placed in areas that are isolated. • Winds have to be 25km/h in order for the turbines to generate a sufficient amount of electricity.

  8. Wind Turbines in the UK • In the UK most of the wind farms that have been built are in Wales and Cornwall. • These are efficient areas because of the open space that they are known for.

  9. Wind Turbines Pros Cons Wind is free. Wind farms need no fuel. The land beneath can still be used for farming. Produces no waste or greenhouse gases. A good way of supplying energy to remote areas. The wind is not always predictable. Areas where wind farms can be built are often near the coast, and land is expensive there. They are noisy. Can kill migrating birds because strong winds attract them.

  10. Wind Turbines/Energy • Winds will always keep blowing as long as the sun is around. Which will probably be the case. • It may be expensive to build but will eventually pay itself. • Power rural areas and even some parts of cities. • It is a renewable source of energy that will not harm anyone except the occasional bird, person that isn’t being safe when climbing it or someone that happens to be walking under it and is just unlucky.
