  3. Where exactly is Egypt?

  4. The Nile River • The Nile is the longest river in the world. (about 4,000 miles!) • The delta of the Nile River empties into the Mediterranean Sea. • The beginning of the Nile is south of Egypt • In ancient Egypt, the Egyptians planted crops around river flooding. They partly controlled flood waters through irrigation

  5. Lower vs. Upper Egypt Remember! Lower Egypt is North, where the Nile Delta empties into the Mediterranean. Upper Egypt is South.

  6. Hieroglyphics • Ancient Egyptian writing uses more than 2,000 hieroglyphic characters. • Each hieroglyph represents a common object in ancient Egypt.

  7. Hair & Jewelry • Young girls usually kept their hair in pigtails while boys had shaved heads, except for one braided lock worn to one side. Both men and women wore wigs. The wigs were made of sheep's wool or human hair for decoration and for heat protection. • Everyone in Egypt wore some type of jewelry. Rings and amulets were especially worn to ward off the evil spirits and injury. Both men and women wore pierced earrings, armlets, bracelets, and anklets. For the rich, jewelry was made of silver or gold with semi-precious. The poorer people wore copper jewelry.
