Time Periods • Medieval Period 1150-1400 • Characteristics • Chant/Plainsong (religious) – monodic – one musical line • Evolved into ORGANUM – 2 or more lines moving at the same time • Early known composers: de Vitry, Machaut, Landini • Listen to an example of music from this time period and briefly describe

Time Periods • Renaissance (c.1400 - c.1600) • Characteristics • polyphony -the simultaneous movement of two or three interrelated parts • Harmonybegan to move from modal system to major and minorscales • a golden period for choral composition as a seemingly endless flow of a capella (unaccompanied) pieces • Listen to the following example from the Renaissance and briefly describe what you hear.

Time Periods • Baroque (c.1600 - c.1750) • Characteristics • Modern orchestra was born • Opera developed • The modern harmonic system based upon the major and minor scales was effectively pan-European • Choral music no longer dominated • Textural intricacy • Bach, Handel and Vivaldi were the most famous composers • Listen to the following music from the Baroque period and briefly describe what you hear.

Time Period • Classical (c.1750 - c.1830) • Characteristics • development of the modern concerto, symphony, sonata, trio and quartet • Structural clarity • Most famous composers from this period: Haydn and Mozart • Listen to a selection from this time period and briefly describe what you hear.

Time Period • Romantic (c.1830 - c.1920) • the golden age of the virtuoso, where the most fiendishly difficult music would be performed with nonchalant ease • Orchestras began to get bigger • Music was more emotionally expressive • Notable composers were Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Brahms and Wagner • Listen to the following music from this period and describe briefly what you hear.

  7. Time Period • 20th century and modern era1920-present • Characteristics • Experimental • Some of the music lacked a tonal center/non-traditional harmony • A departure from standard structure • Listen to the following piece from the 20th century and describe briefly what you hear.
