  1. Perimeter & Area Measurement SPI0406.4.9 Solve problems involving area and/or perimeter of rectangular figures. Chelsea Caraway- 4th Grade Next Slide!!

  2. Table of Contents • Definition of Perimeter • Perimeter Equation • Try Your Own Perimeter Problem!! • Definition of Area • Area Equation • Try Your Own Area Problem!! Next Slide!!

  3. Perimeter • Perimeter is the sum of the lengths of the sides of a polygon. • It can also be defined as the distance around a figure. Next Slide!!

  4. Perimeter Equation • The equation fora perimeter is P=2l+2h. • Another equationthat can be used is P=s+s+s+s. Next Slide!!

  5. Finding Perimeter S S S S Since the perimeter is the sum of all the sides, we need to add s+s+s+s in order to find the perimeter. We could also add twice the length plus twice the height. Next Slide!!

  6. Let’s Try One! 6 2 2 6 Here we have a rectangle with a length of 6 and a height of 2. To find the perimeter, we need to add these together. Next Slide!!

  7. Let’s Try One! 6 6 We first need to add together the length which is 6+6 or 2x6. We get 12. Next Slide!!

  8. Let’s Try One! 2 2 Now we need to add together the height, so we add 2+2 or 2x2. Our answer is 4. Next Slide!!

  9. What’s the Answer?? 6 2 2 6 To find out our perimeter, we need to add 12+4. What does that equal?? That equals 16! To see if we our right, let’s plug our numbers into the equation. P=6+6+2+2. What does that equal? 16! Let’s try it the other way. P=2x2+2x6. What does that equal? 16! Next Slide!!

  10. Area • Area is the quantity of expressing the size of a region of space. • It can also be defined as the number of square units it takes to cover a flat surface. Next Slide!!

  11. Area Equation • The equation for area is A=l x h. Next Slide!!

  12. Finding Area S S S S Since the area is the product of the length and the height, we need to multiply l x h in order to find the area. Next Slide!!

  13. Let’s Try One! 6 2 2 6 Here we have the same rectangle with a length of 6 and a height of 2. To find the area of this rectangle, we need to multiply the length by the height. Next Slide!!

  14. Let’s Try One! 2 6 Since we only need to know one number for the length and one number for the height, we can just look at one 6 and one 2. We need to multiply these numbers together. Next Slide!!

  15. What’s the Answer?? 6 2 2 6 What does it equal when we multiply 6 x 2? We know that it equals 12. Therefore, our area is A=6 x 2. So, what is our area?? 12!! Next Slide!!

  16. How can we use this?? • Area and perimeter can be used to do many things that we have to do everyday. • We need to know the perimeter of our backyard if we are wanting to put up a fence around it. • We need to know the area of a room if we are wanting to get new carpet. Next Slide!!

  17. Objectives • Given a rectangle and the lengths of its sides, the students will be able to calculate the perimeter and area of the rectangle.
