Chapter1 Questioning ‘Globalization’
Setting the Scene • Concepts to Explore • Global networks, development, poverty, recession, global−local connections • Key Words • Globalization, hyper-globalists, sceptical internationalists, neo-liberalism, simultaneity, 2008 recession
Definition of Globalization • What do we mean by globalization? • Structural changes • Neo-liberal, free market ideology (Washington Consensus) • Simultaneity • What is happening in one part of the world is affected by what happens in others • ‘The qualitative transformation of economic relationships across geographical space’ • Historical depth of phenomenon
Positions on Globalization • Two key positions: • Hyper-globalists • Sceptical internationalists • Both have adherents of all political stripes and on both pro- and anti-globalization sides
Geographies of Globalization • Globalization reflected in and influenced by multiple geographies • Many products have a complex geography • Labels of origin become meaningless • Disparity between rich and poor countries; but to blame it just on ‘globalization’ is simplistic • Protest movements as much as capitalist practices are global
Current Trends • Four tendencies: • Localizing processes • Internationalizing processes • Globalizing processes • Regionalizing processes • 2008 recession calls into question free market neo-liberalism
