The WHAT and the WHY! • Reading Informational Text 7.1 • Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. • Being able to read informational text, understand the content, and use the information to write an explanation or apply the knowledge to a task is a lifelong skill.

  3. Observations and Inferences Read Like a Detective; Write Like a Reporter

  4. Observation vs. Inference • Observation – a fact based on one or more of the five senses. • Inference – a logical interpretation based on prior knowledge, experience, and observations.

  8. Reading to Learn • Think about the title of the text, Stalin’s Reign of Terror • What questions come to mind immediately? • Write one question down on your Post-it that you would like the text to answer.

Writing Task • Using the information from the articles and Between Shades of Gray, write a paragraph in which you compare and contrast the time period of Between Shades of Gray and the current situation in Ukraine. How is history repeating itself and how is it not? Support your claims with evidence from the texts.

Clearly, in the book Between Shades of Gray by RutaSepetys, in the articles “Stalin’s Reign of Terror” and “As Violence Escalates in Ukraine, So Do Fears of Civil War,” by CNN(restate the question and insert your claim).For example, (state supportive evidence) (page numbers).Moreover, this evidence supports the idea that (provided your reasoning here). Although some individuals may disagree, obviously, (supply a compelling counterargument). Conclusively, the texts(restate your claim). • Using the information from the articles and Between Shades of Gray, write a 2 paragraphs in which you compare (1 P) and contrast (2P) the time period of Between Shades of Gray and the current situation in Ukraine. How is history repeating itself and how is it not? Support your claims with evidence from the texts.
