So what do we do about it? Kinder and Gentler – • Create or revamp your internet use policies. Set consequences and be prepared to follow through! • One on one Counseling…again, set consequences…” • Be careful…walk the tightrope…don’t disempower!
So what do we do about it? Brut Force– • Install cameras and DVR. You may never need to look at the DVR…a great deterrent…will reduce supply shrinkage too! • Surveillance software takes snapshots of screens throughout the day…be forwarned; you may be shocked. • Install screen sharing software and make spot checks yourself.
So what do we do about it? Make the network be the bad guy– • Real Firewalls with Proxy Server (not a cheap linksys box) (limit who can get to the web) • DNS Filtering…disallows access based on category! (Adult content, Streaming Media, Social Networking, etc.)
Remember the number one “Why?” Unsatisfied at work…Fix it! • Empower your employees…it may grow your business! • Get rid of dead wood…make everyone busier! • Modify your business model…give them new and exciting challenges! “What’s the next right thing??” • Have business development lunches…include everyone. You might be surprised. • Make work fun.
Have you backed up today? Bob Greenberg
What is your most precious business asset? Most likely your data • Correspondence • Contracts • A/R…how much am I owed • CRM • Inventory
Can you afford not to backup? Evaluate • Do I need my data? • If I were to lose that disk, what would I lose? • How long can I afford to be down? • What would I have to do to be operational again? • How long can I afford to be out of business? • How much data?
Why do we backup? Why is offsite critical? • Drive failures • System failures • Theft • Fire • Acts of G-d • Terrorism
Different kinds of backups • Flash drive – small amounts of data • USB Hard drive – daily snapshots • Do I need editions of my data? • Tape – Safest, quickest recovery, but expensive • Offsite Online Backup • Can I use consumer products? • Should I use commercial products? • Redundant Systems
Flash Drives • Cheap • Interactive • Easy to take offsite • Small • Low capacity
USB/Firewire Hard Drives • Greater capacity then USB • Interactive • Easy to take offsite • Fast • Inexpensive • Fast recovery
Tape • 400GB • High Cost • Slowish…backup “window” is critical • Safe • Easy to take offsite (rotational) • Fast recovery
Offsite Online • Cost effective • It’s offsite! No worries about fire, theft, etc. • Slow…may take a week or more for the initial snapshot • However, keeps • Easy to take offsite (rotational) • Fast recovery
Redundant/Disaster Recovery Systems • Doubles your hardware budget/services • Can be offsite/geographically redundant • Can be quasi-instantaneous recovery • Still needs offsite backup!!!
Mandate • In order for this to work, you as the grand-pooba must mandate a backup regimen • Create checks and balances • Person who handles backup media • Person who checks the logs!!! (CHECK THE LOGS) • YOU OR A MANAGER DO SPOT CHECKS. “HAVE YOU BACKED UP?”“LET ME SEE THE LOGS.”
Concslusion • Evaluate • Get a professional…you want to be sure. This is not the job of your nephew in high school or college! • It’s your self-insurance for business continuity • Do it right…don’t skimp, you may not be able to afford the cheapest route. • Mandate! THIS IS SERIOUS BUSINESS • Don’t blow this off.
