Why Backup • Prevent data loss due to: • Hardware failures • Software failures • Deliberate User actions • User mistakes • Carbon-based problems • Pebkac, ID 10 T errors or other user related problems, • Flood/Fire/Storm and other ‘acts of god’ • Theft and Vandalism

What to Backup • All data/files which can not easily be replaced. • Student and staff data files • NDS / AD data • There is no need to backup: • Operating System files • Application or Program files (files with the .EXE, .DLL, or .INI extensions) • Temporary files (files with the .TMP extension) • Scan Disk Error files (files with the .CHK extension)
Types of Backup • Full Backup • Backup of all files in set. • Incremental Backup • Backup of all files which have changed since last backup. • Differential Backup • Backup of all files which have changed since last FULL backup.

Recommended Backup Routine • Incremental backups during cycle • Full backup at end of cycle • Backups done after normal operating hours • You can not backup files currently in use/opened • E.g. • 7 Day Cycle (Friday – Thursday) • Friday – 7pm – Incremental • Monday – Wednesday – 7pm – Incremental • Thursday – 7pm – Full • No Backup on Saturday, Sunday • Media replaced each Friday Morning
Recommended Backup Routine • At least 3 backup cycles/sets • Provides history • Media replaced annually • Backup verified regularly • Always check logs • Use task scheduler to automate backup • Backups kept OFF SITE • i.e. Off school grounds.
