File Management & Computer Use You are required to take notes. I will be taking a grade. There will be a test over this material.
From now on… • If your project doesn’t work because you didn’t follow these guidelines I will NOT give you an extension or spend all of my time trying to help you fix it. • So, please pay attention.
File Extensions • A filename extension is a suffix (separated from the filename by a dot) to the name of a computer file applied to indicate the encoding (file format) of its contents or usage • Neely_musicvideo.avi This is a file extension. This is a filename
What file extensions do we use in this class? • Adobe Premiere Pro • .prproj • .avi • .mpg • .wmv • .mp3 • .psd • .jpeg
What do all those abbreviations mean? • Adobe Premiere Pro • .prproj – this is a premiere pro project file • .avi – a large video file • .mpg – a smaller video file • .wmv – an even smaller video file • .mp3 – an audio file • .psd – Photoshop document with layers still in tact • .jpeg – a picture with no layers
.PRPROJ This is just a project file. It looks like this. It has no video attached to it. It is simply a place holder. What do you need to make this work? The .avi, .mpg, .wmv, .mp3, .psd, or .jpeg
.AVI This is a large video file. Its the file type your videos are saved as when you first capture them from the camera.
.MPG and .WMV These are smaller video files. When you export your video project, we save it as either a .mpeg or .wmv
.MP3 This is an audio file. When you put music in your project, it’s a .mp3. When you record narration, you save it as a .mp3
.PSD or .JPEG This is a picture file. When you make a logo, its either a .psd or .jpeg.
What files do you need to save in order for your video project to work? • .prproj – the project file • .avi – the video captured from camera • .mp3 – if using audio • .psd or .jpeg – if using a logo or picture YOU MUST HAVE ALL OF THEM FOR YOUR VIDEO TO WORK!!!
Any questions about file extensions?
KHS Network • KHS provides each student access to a personal network drive and a student common network drive.
What is part of the network • Your student number • Student common
Can you save your video projects to the network? • NO!! • NEVER!!
Can you save your video projects to the Student Common? • NO!! • NEVER!!

My Student Common Folder • Folder Name: KNeely • Subfolder: 1st Period, 3rd Period, 5th Period, 6th Period, 7th Period • Items in the student common folder will be deleted periodically. This is not a permanent storage location. • Only class related files are stored in the student common folder.
Can you save your video projects to my Student Common folder? • NO!! • NEVER!!
Where do I save my video projects • Save all of your work to your personal folder on your computer. • You should create a folder on your computer: • My Documents/ My Videos/ Your Last Name
What do I name my projects? • Last name_project name
Any questions about how to save?
What do you do with them? SAVE STUFF ON THEM
I need a file out of the student common • What do you do? • You MUST copy the file out of the student common and paste it into your my Documents/ My Videos folder. • You MUST do this before you import the file into your project • But why? • Adobe products (such as Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop) can’t communicate with the network. It messes everything up. That’s why you have all sorts of issues getting your projects to work!
I need a file off the hard drive • What do you do? • You MUST copy the file off the hard drive and paste it into your my Documents/ My Videos folder. • You MUST do this before you import the file into your project • But why? • If you don’t your project will NOT work once you unplug the hard drive.
I need the video from another computer • What do you do? • Ask me for a hard drive. • Go to that computer. • Find the file. • Copy it. • Paste it onto the hard drive. • Go to your computer. • Copy the file off the hard drive • Paste it into your My Documents/ My Videos folder
Any questions about transferring files?
Premiere Pro • When you open a new Premiere Pro project, you have to tell the program where you want it to save. Every time. Lots of people use the computers and Premiere will always default to the last known location. Meaning you might be saving in another students folder and you won’t be able to find it later.
Premiere Pro • When you open a Premiere Pro project, you have to tell it what to call the project. You should name it: Last name_project name
Premiere Pro • What happens if you don’t name it? • It defaults to Untitled01.prproj. • Why is that a big deal? • If you save it as Untitled01.prproj and the person after you saves it as Untitled01.prproj, your project will be lost because the second person will have saved over it. You can’t save multiple things with the same name which is why I tell you to name it something specific.
Ms. Neely, where is my project? • I’m not a psychic. I don’t know. • This is why you need to make sure you save everything to your My Documents/ My Videos folder. • Then you will be able to find it because everything will be in the same place.
Ms. Neely, I have the red screen of death. • You get the red screen of death because Premiere can’t find your supporting files (.avi, .mpg, .mp3, .psd, .jpeg) • Go find them
Ms. Neely, my project isn’t in the student common where I saved it. • Well that sucks. But you aren’t supposed to be saving in the student common. • You are ONLY allowed to save in your My Documents/ My Videos folder. • Now, you have to start over.
Ms. Neely, how do I use Premiere? • We’ve been using Premiere ALL year. • You should know how to use Premiere. If you don’t, I have completely failed at my job. • The fact that someone else has edited your projects isn’t an excuse I’m willing to listen to. • I can’t spend all class period re-teaching you all the stuff we’ve learned this year. • Do you know why some people in this class know how to use Premiere. Because they paid attention the first time.
Ms. Neely, Ms. Neely, Ms. Neely, Ms. Neely, Ms. Neely, Ms. Neely, Ms. Neely, Ms. Neely, Ms. Neely, Ms. Neely, Ms. Neely, Ms. Neely, Ms. Neely, Ms. Neely • Yes, I hear you. • There are 25 of you and 1 of me. • Please wait until I am done talking to whoever I am talking to. Then I will gladly come help you. • I can’t and won’t do your whole project for you. I will help you. I will show you how to do it once and then you’re on your own.
