  3. UMAYYAD DYNASTY (661-750) • Islam spreads W to Atlantic, E to Indus Valley • Damascus, not Mecca, is the major city • Used local officials to help govern • Allows Persian & Byzantine ideas to mix • Rebellion caused by ethnic & class tensions

  4. ABBASSID DYNASTY (750-1250) • Abu al-Abbas leads the capture of Damascus • Abbas moves his gov’t to Baghdad • Ends Arab domination of Islam • Golden Age • Baghdad bigger & wealthier than Constantinople • 900s = Seljuk Turks take over empire • 1200s = Mongols destroy Baghdad
