Poseidon • He is the brother of Zeus, Hades, Hestia, Demeter, and Hera • His Roman name is Neptune • At birth he was eaten by his father (Cronus) , but he later got saved by Zeus. • He road chariots which were pulled by hippocampus or horses that could ride in the sea. • He lived in an underwater palace made of coral and gems • His mother was Rhea • Married to Amphitrite

  3. Poseidon cont. • He was the God of the sea and storms. • He was also known as the “Earth Shaker” • His weapon of choice was a three pronged fish spear known as a Trident. • With his Trident he could create tsunamis, storms etc.

  4. Poseidon vs. Athena • Cecrops (half snake and half human), the first king of Athens, needed to find a patron deity for Athens. Poseidon and Athena both wanted this opportunity. Cecrops asked both of them to present the best gift they can to Athens. Poseidon was first. He struck the ground with his trident which made a well. The water turned out to be salty and was not useful to the people of Athens. Next, Athena struck the ground with her spear and then planted an olive tree. The tree represented “peace and prosperity on earth”. Cecrops thought that Athena’s gift passed the test. So she chose her. The city was also named after her. Poseidon was outraged and cursed the city. The curse made the city of Athens never have enough water.

  5. The Myth’s Theme • The theme of this myth is respect because Poseidon didn’t respect Cecrops Decision and threw a tantrum.
