Tier-0 Power needs estimates May 2010 Update on Computing at CERN - Frédéric Hemmer
Plans for 2010-2012 • Consolidation of the existing 513 capacity • 600 KW of backed-up power • 3.5 MW of Physics capacity • Issue: not before mid 2012! • Provision of “container” style of capacity • Incremental addition of ~400 KW units • Issue: not before mid-2012! • Investigations of remote capacity usage • As a logical extension of 513, not as Grid/Cloud capacity • Already experimenting 100 KW in the Geneva area • But is this really (economically) feasible? Upgrade Milestones • All Market Surveys to be started June 2010 • Site committee September 2010 • Barn to be cleared by the end of October • Adjudication of contracts at March FC • CE works completed July 2011 • EL+CV installations Aug/2011-May/2012 • Increased physics power not available before end Feb 2012 • Increased critical power not available before end May 2012 Computer Centre Upgrade - 3
Containers • Initial provisioning of up to three 300 KW containers, • with a infrastructure capable of 5-6 of such containers on the Prévessinsite (close to building 983), • to accommodate incremental computing capacity increases during the period 2012-2014. • The cost of the underlying infrastructure is estimated at 3 MCHF1 (cost of containers excluded) and • could be made available mid 2012 earliest (civil engineering and associated build permit is needed for modifying/replacing building 983). • Costs of individual containers are currently estimated at 2.5 and 3 MCHF for non-critical and critical equipment respectively. • Containers could also be the solution to accommodate for so-called “private Tier-2’s” requests, where individual institutes are asking for computing equipment to be hosted at CERN.
