Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings Prayer of the WeekPsalm 51: 16-21 16 Rescue me from death, God, my saving God, that my tongue may praise your healing power. 17 Lord, open my lips; and my mouth shall declare your praise. 18 For you do not desire sacrifice; a burnt offering you would not accept. 19 My sacrifice, a contrite spirit; a humbled, contrite heart you will not spurn. 20 Show favor to Zion in your goodness; rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. 21 Then you will be pleased with lawful sacrifice, holocausts offered on your altar.

Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings The Exodus from Egypt(Exodus 12:1-37; 13:17-14:31) Explain how the exodus from Egypt includes (1) a sacrifice, (2) a memorial; (3) a vigil, (4) a Passover, (5) a liberation, (6) a redemption from death A sacrifice: a lamb (spotless) is sacrificed and its blood serves as protection (on doorpost, lintels) A memorial: people of Israel are commanded to commemorate this as it happens A vigil: the Israelites keep a vigil this night of the Passover, waiting God’s saving power; ALSO: the LORD keeps vigil for them A passover: the Lord kills the first-born of Egypt, but “passes over” the Israelites (passover/ “strike a blow”) A liberation: the Lord leads the people of Israel from slavery in Egypt to freedom A redemption from death: From plague, from Pharaoh pursues and would kill the people of Israel at the Red Sea.
Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings The Passover as a “typology” for Christ(Exodus 12:1-37; 13:17-14:31; Mark 14:12-42, e.g.) Explain how the Passover is a central “type” for Jesus’ death, Show how it includes (1) a sacrifice, (2) a memorial; (3) a vigil, (4) a Passover, (5) a liberation, (6) a redemption from death. A sacrifice: Jesus/“God himself” is the lamb (spotless) sacrificed, whose blood serves as protection, as the blood of the lamb preserves the Israelites (on doors) A memorial: Jesus commands his disciples to commemorate this (“Do this in memory of me”); as with the Exodus, the memorial is interwoven with the event A vigil: Jesus keeps vigil in the garden; asks that of his disciples; they try?; as God kept a vigil with the people of Israel A passover: 1- The “last supper” is a Passover meal; 2 - Lord sacrifices His own “first-born”, “passes over” us in our sin; double sensevisible again: strike a blow/pass over A liberation: The Lord leads His people from slavery to into a new life: from slavery to sin and death, new life in God’s grace & love: A redemption from death: Jesus rises from the dead, and makes eternal life available to us; the cross becomes a means of salvation
