  2. Funding? Why should I care • Financial story? • US example? • Current project? • Me! (personal perspective) -> future career!! Develop research idea’s, research lines etc. Content of research: Meaningful

  3. Financial Perspective Academic Research in the Netherlands Netherlands: 0.5% BBP on Academic Research Approx 75% through direct funding of universities (1e geldstroom) Interesting part of funding for individual researcher = 2e / 3e geldstroom 2007: NWO grants to universities: € 285 Mio. EU 7th FP grants to the Netherlands: € 342 Mio.* SenterNovem:€ 400 Mio. ** * 2/3 to public research institutes ** estimated 1/3 to public research inst

  4. Financial perspective TUD Rise in ‘werk derden’ TU Delft during timeframe 2000-2007 to 23% Important background info, however Don’t let this guide your perspective ! Let content be your guide !

  5. Plasterk Dijkgraaf Borst US Research University model: Competitively acquire all funding Direct result: • PhD – develop your own research idea • Netherlands: Not there yet Get best out of current organisational model

  6. Current Project • Who funds your current (PhD) project? • What where the goals of the program that funds your current project? • What is the text of the project proposal of your current project? Learn from current project Develop ‘nose’ for scientific and societal relevance

  7. Academic Funding 101 1. Research Themes: Public grants: NWO Private grants: funding by private 3rd parties (industry etc) Public Private Partnerships: grants by SenterNovem / EU 2. Personal Grants: Public grants: NWO & EU Private grants: occaisional prize (Heinenken Award, Shell award etc)

  8. Research Themes for BK: • Underdevelopped! Currently not that many grant programs especially on architecture/building/city planning etc. Use it or lose it !! Use of existing programs by TUD research can be optimized! Simultaneously: TUD is making an effort to stress the scientific and societal value of this type of research -> In future more dedicated grant schemes could become available. Example: Current crisis-measures EU: emphasis on built environment

  10. Academic funding: tips & tricks Most important: Track Record: you have to be able to show that you are a trustworthy academic person to invest a large sum of money in!! Build: • Academic publication list • Track record of working in academic consortia (use academic conferences to initiate seeds of academic cooperation (co-publication) • Track record of working in public private consortia

  11. Skills to build during your PhD • Analytical mind • Develop your own research ideas (actively develop your talent) • Think about context (scientific and societal relevance) • Feasibility of research • Realistic planning of a project (training courses) • Project formulation and implementation (training courses) Think about the future: What should your track record should look like in a couple of years in terms of: • Publications • Grants (and prizes?) • International experience or activities • Network  (scientific and industrial/societal) • Dedication level

  12. Training to develop skills Training at TU Delft/Research School but also: Yearly NWO Talent Classes: small fee (usually around 90 euro) See http://www.nwo.nl/nwohome.nsf/pages/NWOA_6KJD5L • 21st Century career development (Engels) • Write it right (Engels) • Netwerken, hoe doe je dat? • Kernachtig formuleren • Subsidies aanvragen • Creatief denken, wetenschappelijk verantwoord! • Onderhandelen • People, politics and power (Engels) • Marketing yourself effectively (Engels)

Even if older staff member applies for funding -> not always possible to aqcuire funding for a PhD position that has already started
