Aluminum-copper alloys (2xxx series) may be solution treated for optimum mechanical properties. Precipitation hardening may also be used, but it leads to a significant loss of elongation.

Temper designations are used to indicate the cold-worked or heat-treated condition of aluminum alloys.
Aluminum-manganese (3xxx series) alloys may be heavily strain hardened during cold working.
Silicon may be added to aluminum in significant quantities up to 12% Si.
Alloy 6061-T6 is strengthened by magnesium silicide precipitation.
