  2. What are mental disorders • Is an illness that affects the mind and reduces a person’s ability to function • Mental health experts see abnormal thoughts, feelings, or behaviors as signs, or symptoms, of a mental disorder.

  3. ADHD • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder • Appears in childhood • Often has difficulty in school, home or social settings. • Treated with medication • Results are immediate & dramatic • Just because someone has trouble sitting still or paying attention does not always mean ADHD.

  4. Signs Attention Deficit Hyperactivity • Doesn’t pay attention • Makes careless mistakes • Disorganized • Easily distracted • Forgets to do daily activities • Has trouble following instructions • Fidgets & Squirms • Cant stay seated • Has trouble working quietly • Talks excessively • Has trouble waiting • Interrupts others

  5. Causes of mental Disorders • Physical factors • Heredity • Early experiences • Recent experiences

  6. Anxiety Disorders • Is fear caused by a source you cannot identify or a source that doesn’t pose as much threat as you think. • Generalized Anxiety Disorder • Phobias • Panic Attacks • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder • Post-traumatic Stress Disorder • Mood Disorders • Schizophrenia

  7. Personality Disorders • People with this disorder display rigid patterns of behavior that make it difficult for them to get along with others. They fall into three broad categories: • Group A- Tend to be cold & distant. Overly suspicious of other people. • Group B- overly emotional & unstable. They are selfish & demanding, place high value on themselves. • Group C- cannot make decisions, have strong need for other’s approval.

  8. Eating Disorders

  9. Anorexia Nervosa • This person does not eat enough food to maintain healthy body weight. The main symptom is extreme weight loss. These people think they are fat even when they are thin. It effects one out of 100 girls. • Health risk- lack of essential minerals • Possible causes-troubled relationships, low self esteem etc… • Treatment- The usually deny the problem…. Doctors, dietitians work together.

Bulimia • Is an uncontrolled eating of food then vomiting afterwards….. • Most people maintain a normal weight, however they may dehydration, kidney damage, etc.. • The stomach acid in vomit irritates the throat & erodes the enamel of the teeth. • People use the food to fell better emotionally. • May begin in connection with a diet. • May get help through mental-health professional.

Binge eating disorder • Regularly have uncontrollable urge to eat large amounts of food, without vomiting. • This leads to excessive weight gain along with unhealthy dieting. • Some people do this to avoid dealing with difficult emotions, stress, anger etc. • To treat this, they need to eat smaller amounts and address their problems.

  12. Depression & Suicide

Depression • Feel sad & hopeless for months • Causes problems in all aspects of life. • If not treated, depression can also lead to substance abuse, behavior problems, and even suicide. • It sometimes arrives “out of the blue” from stressful situations, or even life changing situations. • Medications can be given in order to treat depression.

  14. Self-Injury • Is a unhealthy way to cope with emotions, stress, or traumatic events. • Occurs most often in young women. • Mental health professionals can help them learn better ways to deal with emtions.

  15. Suicide Prevention • Is intentional killing of oneself. • Mood disorders, such as depression, are a major risk factor for suicide.

When a friend is thinking about suicide Do… Do not…. • Trust your feelings • Take threats seriously • Say you are concerned • Listen • Talk calmly • Involve an adult • Stay with them until help arrives • Dare the person to do it. • Judge the person • Analyze the person’s motives • Argue or offer reasons not to attempt • Leave the person alone

  17. Treating Mental Disorders • Sometimes people do not recognize the signs of a mental disorder. • Willpower alone can overcome the problem. • Or they may not know where to go to get help… • Psychiatrist- a person who treats mental disorders.
