The Potential of NLCs (Katz & Earl) “NLCs are structures that bring people together for focused collaborative inquiry, focused instructional leadership and focused professional learning, in the service of learning for students” This session explores what this might mean for our work in 2011, especially the italicized words.

3. Initial Activity To achieve this potential NLC leaders need to be clear on terms like those in italics. Lets check this. What 3 or 4 words do you most associate with- • Management • Leadership • Leadership Learning • Leadership Development (in a schooling setting)

4. Management Is a social process for coordinating the key resources of the school • Human, • Materials, • Technology in the most efficient manner

5. Leadership Is a social process for influencing the key educational activities of the school • Pedagogy • Culture to improve valued educational outcomes

6. Leadership Learning Is a PLD process that usually has- • A strong emphasis on knowledge building, and • A focus on individual positional leaders in a school, and their skills and understandings It results in instructional leadership.

7. Leadership Development Is a PLD process that usually- • Carefully mixes knowledge building with relationship and capacity building, and • With details individualised for each school site and its mix of experienced and aspiring leaders It results in distributed leadership
