INTRODUCTION An Automated Teller Machine is a self service banking machine attached to a host computer through a telephone network. Services available through an ATM include: • Make deposits of cash and checks. • Withdraw cash . • Transfer money between accounts. • Obtain account balance.
HISTORY • Don Wetzel, vice-president of product planning at Docutel (USA), was the chief conceptualist of ATM. • He along with Tom Barnes and George Chastain began work in 1968. • The working prototype came about in 1969. • The first ATM was installed at the Rockville Centre(New York) based Chemical Bank.
PARTS OF AN ATM • Two input devices: Card reader & Keypad • Four output devices: Speaker, Display screen, Receipt printer & Cash dispenser
TYPES OF ATM CONNECTIVITY • An ATM connects and communicates through a host processor . • Two types of connectivity Leased line Dial-up Line
Leased Line: ATM connects directly to the host through a 4 wire point-to-point dedicated phone line. • Dial-up Line: ATM connects to the host through a normal phone line using a modem and a toll free number. or Through an ISP using a local access number.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LEASED AND DIAL-UP LINE • Leased line: Initial cost of setting up very high. Monthly operating costs very high. • Dial-up line: Initial cost of setting less than half of leasedline. Monthly operating costs fraction of that of leased line.

SAFE USAGE • Don’t scratch or bent your ATM card. • Don’t write down your PIN anywhere. • Make your PIN a series of numbers or alphabets that you can easily remember. • Cover the ATM keypad when you type your PIN so that other people cannot see it.
SECURITY FEATURES INSIDE AN ATM FACILITY • Surveillance camera. • Doors that automatically lock if there is an attempt to break open the machine. • Alarm system that connects to central monitoring point.
