Bonobo: The Forgotten Ape By William Damsky
Bonobos Are in Danger • Adults are hunted for bush-meat. • Infants are trapped for pets, and usually die. This infant lived it’s life in a suitcase after being captured as a pet.
Closest Human Relative • Chimps and Bonobos are very similar, sharing the same genus. (Pan troglodytes, Pan paniscus). • Bonobos are often overlooked or called pygmy chimps, but infact they are a unique and important species. • Both of these species are genetically 98.6% identical to humans.
Some Statistics • There are currently 10,000 or less bonobos in the wild. • Endangered Species – U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service • Vulnerable Species – IUCN Red Book • Appendix 1 Species - CITES
Questions I will answer? Can the wild bonobo population be saved? Or will they be doomed to a existence behind bars?
Where I will find my information: U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service The Bonobo Protection Fund Kanzi: The Ape on the Brink of the Human Mind by Savage- Rumbaugh, Lewin These are just a few of many possible sources.
