Overview • Globalization • Team Discussion • Globalization @ BD • Global Competence • Product Development in a Global Environment • Questions
Globalization “The economics of nations are becoming increasingly interconnected. Information technology and knowledge cross borders through international telecommunications and on-line services. Computer-based engineering work is handed off around the world. Business, R&D, design, manufacturing, marketing and distribution are going global and engineering and engineering standards must go with them” (The American Society of Mechanical Engineering’s Committee on Issues Identification)

What is Globalization? • Increased awareness of others globally • “We are not in Kansas anymore” • Changes to: economy, government, culture • Increasing global interactions among people of different cultural and ethnic backgrounds • Increasing interdependencies • Rapidly changing technologies • Communication advances
Introduction to Globalization • 5 Levels Domestic enterprise - according to where it sells its products however even on this level it still needs to scan the globe for recent trends and opportunities and source internationally. Export/International Corporation - Products, services or technology that is exported through distributors, with few personnel overseas • Multinational Organization - Until recently was seen as the final stage of organizational development. It includes Regional & national operations. • Can adapt the domestic market model to cultural contexts. • Can adapt systems/processes to international competitive conditions. • Develops alliances and ventures. • Requires managers to work in cross-cultural situations. • Is responsive, flexible and adaptable to change in markets. Global Enterprise - Seek to balance structure and flexibility, global and local needs and on-time product delivery with low costs. Transnational Corporations - integrate resources and responsibilities across all business units regardless of national boundaries. Globalization “What’s the relevance of globalization to you personally, and to your future in engineering? I can answer that in one word: Everything. No matter what area of engineering you enter, your ability to remain on the leading edge, and to progress in our organization, will depend largely on your capacity to connect and communicate globally” (Ken Kohrs, Former VP of the Ford Motor Company)
How Does Globalization Affect Me? • Discuss in your teams (~3-4 minutes) • Why does globalization matter to me? • How does it affect me in my career? • What skills do I need for success? • Be prepared to share with class
Global Competence “Having an open mind while actively seeking to understand cultural norms and expectations of others, leveraging this gained knowledge to interact, communicate and work effectively outside one’s environment” (Hunter, White, & Godbey, 2006, p. 270)
Global Competence “America’s future depends upon our ability to develop a citizen base that is globally competent…The United States needs more people who understand how other people think, how other cultures work, and how other societies are likely to respond to American action” (The Commission on International Education)
Global Competence “A solid understanding of globalization is key to an engineer’s success in today’s global society. [Development of global competence] will enable 21st-century engineers to develop into professionals capable of working successfully both domestically and globally, highly respected by the general public and regarded…the world over as professionals of the highest order” (Patricia Galloway, 2008)
