Teacher supply & demand initiatives DE&T has introduced a number of initiatives to increase the supply of teachers to Govt schools These initiatives include: • Graduate recruitment program • Student teacher practicum scheme • Teaching scholarship scheme
Graduate Recruitment • Vacancies only for graduates completing studies since 1/1/2002 • No competition from experienced teachers • Vacancies posted on Recruitment Online • Fixed term or ongoing vacancies
Teaching in Rural Schools Survey of recent graduates highlighted the following advantages of teaching in rural areas: • Smaller class sizes – more time with students • Students easier to deal with – less distractions, able to concentrate on improving teaching skills • Greater community support • Career advancement – opportunities come earlier • Small school – Easier communication / teamwork
Considering a rural teaching job? The following initiatives are in place to support the recruitment of teachers to fill vacancies in rural & other hard to fill locations. • Student teacher practicum scheme • Teacher scholarship scheme
Student Teacher Practicum Scheme The following financial incentives are available to final year student teachers to encourage them do their practicums in hard to staff schools: • A subsidy of $900 may be available to student teachers placed in rural schools and who are required to live away from their home location. • A travel subsidy may be available to students required to commute daily to hard to staff locations – including schools in the outer metropolitan growth areas. • $300 for travel time greater than 1 hr each way • $200 for travel time between 45 mins & 1 hr each way.
Teacher Scholarship Scheme Objective To provide financial incentives for graduates to accept employment in “hard to staff” vacancies “Hard to staff” vacancies are categorised by: • Geographic locations • Rural locations, • Outer metropolitan growth areas • Curriculum shortfall areas • Maths, PE, IT, LOTE, Technology Studies, Spec Ed, Physics, Music.
Teacher Scholarship Scheme Eligibility • Recipient will need to have completed their studies during the 12 months prior to the vacancy commencement date. Benefits • Financial incentives up to $9,000 • ONGOING employment. • Salary from 1 January 2006 if employed from beginning of term1.
Scholarship – Financial Incentives Four tier scale of payments reflecting differing degrees of recruitment difficulty. • Category 1 scholarship • $5000 plus $4000 retention bonus • Designated hard to staff school and hard to staff subjectarea • Category 2 scholarship • $4000 plus $2000 retention bonus • Designated hard to staff school and other subject area ,OR Rural school and hard to staff subject area Continues next slide
Scholarship Financial Incentives 2 • Category 3 scholarship • $4000 (No retention bonus) • Rural school and other subject area , ORSchool in outer suburban growth area and hard to staff subject, ORSchool in provincial centre and hard to staff subject. • Category 4 scholarship • $3000 (No retention bonus) • Highest statewide priority subject area (currently Mathematics or Special Ed) in a metropolitan school
