  2. Religions and Countries • Catholicism • Anglicanism • Protestantism • Islam • Eastern Orthodox • Hebrew • El Dorado • France • Spain • Portugal • England • Turkey • Italy • Russia

  3. Catholicism • Different in each country. • SpanishCatholicism was oppressive • French was a figurehead • Italian was looser and helped renaissance • Portugal’s was waning

  4. Anglicanism • Was basically Catholicism with a King Henry twist

  5. Protestantism • Began by Martin Luther and his 95 Theses • Also included Calvinism and others

  6. Islam • Began with Muhammad • Based in Mecca • Grew in strength with the Ottoman Empire

  7. Eastern Orthodox • Had split from the Catholic church because of the Pope • Differences in practices and services carried out

  8. Hebrew • Hebrews, descendents of the original twelve tribes of Israel • Jesus is not God’s son

  9. El Dorado • Voltaire’s ideal religion • Everyone is a priest • Only give thanks

  10. Connections to Candide • Catholicism is not the best, but is respected • Islam is a barbaric religion • Anglicanism is to be looked down upon • Fight between Catholics and Orthodoxians is flawed • Protestants have it closest

  11. Influences • These influenced his writing very evidently • Killing of Inquisitor and Jew • Old woman’s adventures in Moorish Africa • Germany (Protestant) is the most perfect place in the world
