I the Colonies Organize to ResistA. the Stamp Act • Parliament passes Stamp Act • 1s act that taxed goods and services not only imports • Required colonists to purchase special stamped paper for any legal contract • Violaters tried in vice-admiralty cts. w/o juries • Stamp Act enrest, loss of respect for British officials • Tensions explode into action

Stamp Act Congress • Bostonians organize into a group called the Sons of Liberty to protest Stamp Act • Sam Adams=leader • Conduct demonstrations against Stamp Act • VA passes sets of resolutions against the act • States the virginians can only be taxed by VA assembly • Reps from 9 colonies meet in NYCStamp Act Congress

SAC issues Declaration of Right and Grievances • States that Parliament lacks power to tax colonies because they were not rep. in Parliament • SAC & Dec. of Rights & Grievances 1st time colonies act as one • NYS agree to nonimportation policy to boycott British goodsrepeal of Stamp Act but passing of Declaratory Act • Declaratory Act= Parliament has power to make laws that govern colonies

Townshend Acts • Townshend acts= taxes on imported goods from GB including the most pop drink in the colonies: TEA • Protested w/ “Taxation w/o representation” • Boycotted British goods • British officials seize Hancock's ship & accuse of smuggling • Riots ensue British officials stationed in Boston

  6. II Tension Mounts in MassachusettsA. The Boston Massacre • Mob of colonial protesters taunt British officials • British fire into crowd killing 4 • Incident known as Boston Massacre • The massacre and the propaganda enraged colonists • Parliament repeal Townshend Acts except tax on tea

  8. B. The Boston Tea Party • British East India co. hurt by boycotts so theyre allowed to sell tea w/o tax • This hurt colonial tea merchants so they protest violently • Boston Tea party= colonists dressed up as indians dumped British tea off ships into Boston Harbor

Intolerable Acts • Kind George infuriated by Boston Tea PartyIntolorable Acts: • Shuts down Boston Harbor • Quartering Act= mandated colonists to house soldiers • Martial Law= rule imposed by British military • Committees of Correspondence assemble the 1st Continental Congress • Wrote declaration or colonial rights • If Britain uses force the colonies would use force to fight back

III Fighting Erupts at Lexington and Concord • New England minutemen stockpile firearms @ Concord to prepare for fight • Minutemen=civilian militia • British gen. sends troops to seize weapons • Paul Revere “the British are coming” • British & minutemen clash at Lexington on their way to Concord= British victory

  11. Continued to Concord but found no weapons • Minutemen attack british w/ guerilla warfare on their march back = AMERICAN victory • Colonists & British now enemies
