Welcome Thursday, January 16th You will need: Speech Outline (Writer’s Notebook) ASSIGNED NETBOOK Headphones (optional, and if you earn them) Before Class Begins: Log into your netbook and open a new Google document. Title the document Last name, First Name- Speech REMINDER: any names written down for negative behavior will receive a detention.
Agenda: • Warm-Up • Introductions- Examples • Complete Introductions • Begin Body paragraphs • Reminder- Vocabulary Quiz Next Tuesday! • With any extra time make a Quizlet study guide! I can support my claims with relevant evidence, sound valid reasoning, and well-chosen details.
Warm-Up • Share your outline with your elbow partner; listen to your partner’s outline and answer the following questions. • Is the topic something that could help the school or community? • Is there a clear thesis statement? • Does your partner have three reasons that actually support what they are arguing for?
Introductions • Your speech introduction should hook in the audience, state a counterclaim (the although statement), and clearly state a thesis. • Example- When you get home from school do you ever feel like your back-breaking backpack weighs over a thousand pounds? Then, when you drop it on the table, you feel like you may have made a dent? This is how I feel daily! Math, English, Social Studies and Science; I mean really, how much more can we get? Although some people feel homework is crucial to our growth, I disagree. Teachers should cut down on homework because it stresses students out, causes lack of sleep, and is just too time consuming. • You will have the next 15-20 minutes to complete a clear introduction for your persuasive speech.
Body Paragraphs • Your body paragraphs elaborate on the three reasons from your thesis. This is a good place to include imagery and figurative language! • Example- The first reason why the school should add an extra hour to Sailor Celebration is because students will be happier students. Favorably, students love hanging out with their friends! Mrs. Prentice loves to dance like a maniac with the jump rope with her colleagues. Also, studies have shown and of course you can tell in your classes that the more fun the students are having, the more they are likely to learn the information. Why wouldn’t you want to have better tests scores and see students having fun, at the tiny cost of an extra hour of Sailor Celebration. • Work on your own detailed, persuasive body paragraphs.
Exit Ticket- Last 5 minutes of class • Look over the rubric and tell your table partner what area you need to work on to have an excellent speech.
