Purpose of Summary-Response • Most common paper in college • Cross-curricular assignment • English, History, Social Science, Philosophy, Business, Science, Math, etc. • Proves you can READ, WRITE and ultimately THINK critically about another’s argument regardless of whether you go on to college or not • In other words, you consider carefully what others argue NOT just blindly accept what they say

Skills used in a Summary-Response • Practice ACTIVEreading • Comprehend & Analyze the argument & supporting ideas • Learn to summarize adeptly • Articulate argument clearly & succinctly • Evaluate the validity of an author’s argument • Think critically about WHAT they say as well as HOW they say it • Strengthen YOUR writing voice by engaging with another author • Strengthen your thesis statement and critical analysis
