Case Example 1: Joe • Joe is a 2nd grade student who was referred by his teacher for refusing to do work and throwing tantrums (whining, pounding his hands on his desk, and throwing his papers on the floor). This problem occurs most frequently when Joe is given a math assignment to work on in math class. After he throws a tantrum he is often sent to the back table where he works on sheets of single digit addition facts. His behavior has become much worse since beginning the lessons on subtraction, but the behavior started with the introduction of double digit addition problems.
Antecedent Behavior Consequence Given assignments in math class Throws tantrum Goes to the back table and works on easier single digit addition and subtraction Example 1: What is the function? Function: The function of Joe’s behavior appears to be to escape more difficult math problems (double digit addition and subtraction)
Competing Behavior Pathway: Short-term goal • Reducing Problem Behavior • Example w/ Joe Go to back table with easier work No setting event ID’d Math Assignment Throws a Tantrum Raise hand & ask
Competing Behavior Pathway: Long-term goal • Increasing Desired Behavior • Example w/ Joe Complete math work Success in math No setting event ID’d Math Assignment Throws a Tantrum Go to back table with easier work
Competing Behavior Pathway • Example w/ Joe Complete math work Success in math Go to back table with easier work No setting event ID’d Math Assignment Throws a Tantrum Raise hand & ask
