Week 4 Podcasting and the Flipped Classroom
Podcasting Defined • An episode of a downloadable series • Like a radio show you can download after the fact • Like getting on ABC.com and watching your favorite TV shows later. • Like using TiVO and recording episodes.
Where Do I Get Them? • iTunes / ItunesU • Websites • Free • Variety of topics • Scholarly items • Less-than-scholarly
How to Use Them • For me…. • Film podcasts • History items
For class… • Have kids make one on a topic • Public speaking opportunity • For absent students • Fuller – Speaking assessments
HOW? • Audacity • Garage Band
Audacity - Detail Silence a highlighted section COPY highlighted portion Highlight a section – eliminate the rest
Screencasting / Podcasting Applications 1) Can capture (visually and audibly) what you are doing ON your screen. • Tech demos 2) Narrating over class PPs. Making them into movies / podcasts.
Screencasting Programs • Screenflow • Camtasia
Other Screencasting • Screencast-o-Matic • Jing

“Flipping Class” Philosophy • Traditional • Direct instruction IN class during school hours • Gradual release practice steps as homework • Flipped Classroom • Direct instruction OUTSIDE of class hours • YouTube, Moodle • Practice done IN class with peers and teacher present
Like the Idea….but How? • Pick ONE lesson you are already planning on doing. • Work on podcasting that • Find something on-line already • TED • Kahn Academy • Re-work how you use the class time a little • Application • Discussion
Benefits • Different use of class time • Application rather than lecture • Yes, even thought the podcast is, in effect, a lecture • Keeps ME focused and on-topic • 15 minute videos • Pushes students to be responsible and independent • Great for absent kids!
Drawbacks • Time-intensive to make! • 15 min video = 2 hours total • Access for kids? • YouTube / GoogleDocs • P Drive • Few DVD copies • Did they watch it? • YOU are “out there” on the web, open for criticism!
