  4. Kangaroo • the largest living marsupials in the world • usually red or grey • average height about 1.5 m (5 ft), weigh 55 kg (121 lb) • more than 50 species of kangaroos • have a pouch to keeptheirchildren in safety

  5. Koala • not a bear but a marsupial • a large head, hairy ears fringed with white and a large nose • grows up to 84 cm long, and weighs up to 14 kg (30 lb) • spendnearly 80 per cent oftheirlives by sleeping

  6. Emu • largest bird except the ostrich • adult emu canbe about 1.5 m (5 ft) high and weighs about 55 kg (120 lb) • run at speed up to 50 km/h (30 mph) • defend themselves by kicking and swim well

  7. Platypus • one of two egg laying mammals • males average about half a metre in length and one to two kilograms in weight • on each hind foot of the male there is a poison spur that can kill small animals •  life span is about 10 years

Echidna • secondof two egg laying mammals • the only native Australian mammal found throughout the entire continent • reaches about 50 cm (19.5 in) in length, plus tail, and 6.5 kg (14 lb) in weight • electroreceptors in the tip of the snoutto detect electrical signals given off by worms and ants

  9. EucalyptusAcacia • member of the genus dominate the tree flora of Australia •  reduce the risk of malaria • 1300 species, about 960 of them native to Australia • used as a symbol in Freemasonry
