CGVE- Flexible IT options A quick look at 2 IT approaches: Wikis- David Grainger Moodle- David Gorman
Past options • O-Ten materials, students co-/enrolled, and doing correspondence • Print West – self paced, F2F or correspondence • Teacher generated resources- supplement resources- takeaways if classes missed • CGVE online [Training Division] some core • Training Package resources- print/online esp. for electives
Problems • Cost of resources • Keeping track of students and their [often] individual Learning Plans • Assessment validation • Sourcing resources- where is the best resource for particular students needs • Other teachers accessing resources/students prgress and helping them
Wikis • Can easily store teachers’ notes and handouts • Can easily create individual Learning Plans
Students own wiki • Can link to master wiki- or other web based resources • Students can upload completed work to their own wiki- use as portfolio
Wiki future • Easy to create [low tech skills] • Low maintenance- create it once and leave it • Low/no cost • DET stamp of approval • Easy to use- low IT skills required by users
Wiki downside • Can’t use as a Student management system- recording marks etc. • Limited storage • Some cost if requiring extra capacity • In free model resources are publicly available
Moodle Can plan weekly delivery [also possible in wiki]
Moodle Plusses • Moodle has a large file storage capacity • Has been formally accepted as DET/TAFE web tool- no firewall issues • Tracks student progress from upload
