Find-a-Mentor Program How to Find and Develop Career Mentors
Find-a-Mentor Program • Complete a Perry Outreach Program • Apply online to Find-a-Mentor Program • Matched with a mentor in your area of interest, e.g., engineering, medicine, etc. Now What?
Working with a Mentor 1. Think about what you want out of a mentor. Advice on classes and college majors? Learn more about their jobs? Develop a list of questions for your mentor in advance of your first meeting.
Working with a Mentor 2. Start slowly. Mentoring relationships take time to form. Start with brief phone or in-person meetings and build to job shadowing and hands-on experiences. Be reasonable in your expectations. Your mentor may have a very busy “day job”
Working with a Mentor 3. Communicate effectively & professionally. Use your mentor’s preferred means of communication, e.g., email or phone Be brief in requesting a meeting and leave detailed conversations for in-person meetings Keep the conversation on your educational and career goals.
Working with a Mentor 4. Follow through! A good mentor is always there for you, but you need to be the driving force in the relationship. Keep your mentor informed of changes in your academic or career trajectory. Show up for all scheduled meetings & respond to written inquiries.
Working with a Mentor 5. Thank your mentor. Send a brief “thank you” note or email after meetings. “Pay It Forward” by mentoring others...that’s what your mentor is doing!
