Outline • Preparing to contact mentors • Global Health Networking Reception! • Center for Global Health site • Finding your own project • Student perspectives • Final Reminders
Preparing to Contact Potential Mentors • It helps if you are interested in a particular country or topic area (infectious diseases, surgery, psychiatry etc) • If you’re not sure, or are willing to go where your mentor may lead you, then be sure to mention that • Be persistent! Sometimes faculty are busy, and may not respond immediately…
Primary Contacts • Dr. Peter Veldkamp • Dr. Thuy Bui • Dr. Joan Harvey
Global Health Networking Reception!!! • GHIG has invited faculty, residents in the global health medicine tracks, and other students who have done international work • Great opportunity to network and informally speak with them about opportunities abroad and gain contact information!!! • Tuesday, September 28th, 6-8pm, BST-S100A
Center for Global Health website • http://www.globalhealth.pitt.edu/about/affiliate-faculty.php • Lists affiliated faculty, contact details and areas of specialization/research interest
Finding your own project… • AMSA has international opportunities site (http://www.amsa.org/global/ih/ihopps.cfm)
Finding your own project… • Remember even if you decide to research work with an outside organization , to qualify for funding from Pitt, you will need to find a faculty mentor in addition to a local mentor
Final Reminders • Next noon lecture: Funding opportunities • Remember to RSVP for (and attend!) the Global Health Networking Reception 9/28/2010 • Sign up for the GHIG mailing list if you haven’t done so already!
