  2. What people say… • mathematics is to be thought of as human-made, connected with the rest of knowledge, and just as much a cultural product as literature and music. With this change it starts to make sense to consider the evolution of mathematics in parallel with the evolution of other aspects of culture such as music, the visual arts and poetry • Robin Allot Zia Rahman

  3. What people say… • there are pedagogic possibilities for using popular culture texts to make available more positive relationships with mathematics to a wider number of people. They create spaces for learners’ own views and so give people alternatives to the current limited range of ways of relating to mathematics. What’s the use of… DVD • The DVD has the support of Prof Marcus Du Sautoy (Oxford), who introduces each topic area covered • Support and materials have also been provided by Prof Peter McOwan (QMUL) via the CS4FN project • A number of organisations and employers have been involved in the development of the DVD, each demonstrating the value of maths in their fields and its relevance to a schools based audience

What’s the use of… DVD • The DVD has the ability to take the message of graduate careers to a schools audience – and in particular to a widening participation audience • The employer contributions are linked with a series of interactive games, puzzles and worksheets – all linked to GCSE Maths and developed by the MMG team at QMUL

Key Initiatives: WTPO • The knowledge and expertise based in London East have helped to develop some excellent resources that are currently being used nationwide including several poster campaigns • ‘What’s the point of…’ has been specifically developed by the London region – in response to school needs – and has been taken up nationally, generating great interest including translation into Welsh (as part of HEFCW project) Zia Rahman

  12. What’s the point of… • A series of informative leaflets which are available to download, A4 leaflet and poster • Tackles topics covered at GCSE and A Level maths • Offers insight into areas where specific maths is being used with popular culture and topical themes as the background
