Story Behind the Amendment John Peter Zenger • Was a publisher of a weekly journal in NYC. • Was accused or criticizing the NY governor William Crosby in 1733 • Had him arrested, but jury thought was unconstitutional. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Peter_Zenger
Importance Then Sedition Act • Four bills passed by federalists in 1798 • To protect alien citizens from enemy powers • Says not right to write malicious things about the government
