STATUS OF GEOTHERMAL EXPLORATION AND PRIVATE SECTOR OPPORTUNITY IN UGANDA DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGICAL SURVEY AND MINES MINISTRY OF ENERGY AND MINERAL DEVELOPMENT
GEOTHERMAL EXPLORATIONIN UGANDA WORK DONE Reconnaissance surveys in western Uganda begun in 1935. Recent (1990s to present) studies focused on surface geology, geochemistry, geophysics at 3 prospects:
PREVIOUS FINDINGS UGA/92/002 project: geochemistry resulted in: 160˚ - 200˚C subsurface temps for KATWE 120˚-150˚C for BURANGA > 200˚C for KIBIRO UGA/8/003 project: geochemistry resulted in: 140˚C for KATWE 200˚C for BURANGA, 100-140˚C for KIBIRO Fresh water intrusion may have lowered Kibiro, Katwe readings
GEOTHERMAL EXPLORATION IN UGANDA RECENT FINDINGS ICELAND project: preliminary resistivity results suggest best geothermal reservoir at KIBIRO. Drilling required to confirm. Af. Dev. Bank project: No conclusive geophysics completed for KATWE or BURANGA.
GEOTHERMAL EXPLORATION IN UGANDA NEAR FUTURE PROGRAMMES • BURANGA GEOTHERMAL PROSPECT • BGR / Germany funds committed to carry out geological and geophysical exploration • Field work scheduled January – March 2005 • Micro-seismic monitoring will continue till November 2005
GEOTHERMAL EXPLORATION IN UGANDA NEAR FUTURE PROGRAMMES • KATWE-KIKORONGO AND KIBIRO PROSPECTS • With World Bank, Iceland support, detailed geological, geochemical and geophysical exploration, including temp gradient drilling, will be carried out at both sites. • Procurement in Jan. 2005. Field work in April 2005.
GEOTHERMAL EXPLORATION IN UGANDA NEAR FUTURE PROGRAMMES WB, Iceland providing support for geological and geochemical sampling at 43 additional prospects
GEOTHERMAL EXPLORATION IN UGANDA CONCLUSIONS • Due to drought, rapid growth, additional power generation capacity needed urgently • Gov’t wants US private sector participation in geo development • Uganda energy policies strongly favor private sector power generation, distribution • Preliminary subsurface temperature ranges (100 to >200˚C) suitable for power generation at Katwe, Burange, Kibiro prospects • Three prospects still at prefeasibility stages • World Bank, Iceland, African Development Bank and German government providing prefeasibility assistance. Signficant WB subsidies available for geo rural electrification.
Near Term Private Sector Opportunity • Gov’t recognizes insufficient data exists to establish binding PPAs • Gov’t proposes non-binding, MOU-type agreements to obtain private sector expertise, jointly seek financing and pave way for future private sector power generation
