How do we answer vocabulary questions? • Read the question carefully • Make out the meaning of the sentence before deciding on which word • Look at the choices given to you • Identify those words which you know • See if any fits into the blank • If none of the known words fit • Look at unknown words • Try to guess their meanings

  3. How do we answer vocabulary questions? Example: Jane was ________ when her mother gave her a puppy • Exhilarated • Rejected • Elated • Depressed What is your answer?

  4. How do we answer vocabulary questions? Using the method, Jane was ________ when her mother gave her a puppy • Exhilarated = ??? • Rejected = unwanted; turned away • Deceived = cheated • Depresses = unhappy; miserable

  5. How do we answer vocabulary questions? • Exhilarated = ??? • Rejected = unwanted; turned away • Deceived = cheated • Depresses = unhappy; miserable • I believe you know the meaning of the last 3 words • The only one left is (a), which you may not know • So we shall guess its meaning…

Exhilarated • We are familiar with words starting with ‘EX’ • They usually mean something EXTREME • Extreme= VERY, VERY, VERY / To the fullest extent / The maximum you can do • Eg. Extremely angry, Expel, Extinct • So we can roughly guess that ‘Exhilarated’ tells us about an EXTREME FEELING / ACTION

  7. How do we answer vocabulary questions? Exhilarated • ‘Hilarated’ may have came from the word ‘Hilarious’ • Hilarious = very funny • So if ‘Hilarated’ came from ‘Hilarious’, it must have meant happiness, something joyful • Because you laugh only when you are happy right?

  8. How do we answer vocabulary questions? Exhilarated Very + Happy • Putting together the meanings, exhilarated must have meant ‘VERY HAPPY’
