Quote of the Day • The important thing is this: to be able at any moment to sacrifice that which we are for what we could become ~ Charles Du Bos • Experience is not what happens to you; it's what you do with what happens to you. ~AldousHuxley
Concepts of the Day • Signal versus Noise • Not just media spin but head noise • System One and System Two in your brain • Our brains work at two levels, quick (System One)—and slow, deliberate (System Two) • Which is the most common (One or Two)? • DO NOT SHOUT THE ANSWER PLEASE • A Bat and a Ball cost $1.10 • The bat costs $1 more than the ball • How much does the ball cost? • NO, not $.10 If it did, then Ball ($.10) + Bat ($1.10) = $1.20 • $.05 $.05 + $1.05 = $1.10 • Volunteer?
Learning Why the difference? • How did you learn to drive? • GACA Again? • Chapter 6 (Lecture) • Record, Question, Recite, Reflect, Review, Summarize • Chapter 7 (Text) • Survey, Focus, Read, Question, Recite, Reflect, Review, Summarize • Notice one of the key concepts is REFLECTION • What techniques do you have for remembering information...said another way—how do you move knowledge from the STM to LTM?
Remember the circle? • Reading when time constrained—that is what it means to survey • Next, focus on the task (put away distraction) and read in segments • Read it, what is the main idea • Question/Recite/Reflect • Think about the topic—jot down ideas • Review and sum up • Very handy when prepping for midterm or final exam • Look over those margin notes, bold words, glossary of terms, etc.
Immediate Memory • Lasts only seconds • Provides a sense of continuity • Short Term Memory • Lasts up to several minutes • 7 +/- 2 components • AKA Working Memory • Scratch Pad • Transfers to Long Term with Effort • Long Term Memory • Lasts a lifetime* • Different types Declarative Memory Non-Declarative Memory • Procedural • Skills and habits • Emotional responses • Priming • Semantic • Facts • Figures • Episodic • Events • Times
Obstacles to Learning—Lecture or Reading It is about discipline • Distractions • Talking • Texting • Surfing • Thinking of a response too soon • Arguing (mentally or actually) • Disagreement is OK, but there is a knack to it • Angry, sad, etc—emotion versus logic! • That is what the media counts on! What do distractions cost you?
Simple Knowledge • Immature • Contents are complete, cannot look outside the box for answers • What is learned in one class cannot be applied to other courses • Mature • Knowledge is made up of discrete parts that can be mixed and matched to make up more complex bits of knowledge
