  2. Quotes of the Day • Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life. ~ Confucius • Hard work spotlights the character of people: some turn up their sleeves, some turn up their noses, and some don't turn up at all.~ Sam Ewing • By working faithfully eight hours a day you may eventually get to be boss and work twelve hours a day. ~ Robert Frost • The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary. ~ Vince Lombardi

  3. Words of the Day • Disingenuous • Not straightforward or candid; insincere or calculating • Kinesthetic • The sense that detects bodily position, weight, or movement of the muscles, tendons, and joints • Inter • a prefix meaning between, among • Intra • within; inside

  4. Concepts of the Day • Learning Styles • Not about the ONLY way you learn • More about how you learn best • How do you learn best?

  5. COLL 1000 Pillars • Midterm—flat tire, no spare • What next? • It is about communication • When is the last time you checked your school email?

  6. Sensory Modes • VARK—or just VAK • Visual • Auditory • Kinesthetic • Reading? • Reality is we use all of these • I read the repair manual but learn best by doing • If you did not do the Inventory (pp. 181-184), it is not a bad idea to understand how you gather information. Gather?

  7. Left or Right Brain? • Right — visual and more random • Left — language and logic • Much ado about nothing? • We use both sides, it is more about dominance • Again, understanding how you do things is the key

  8. Multiple Intelligences • Linguistic • Logical • Spatial • Musical • Kinesthetic • Interpersonal • Intrapersonal • Naturalist Flying (job preferences)

  9. Job Preferences • What do you want to do? • Debt? • What do employers want?

  10. Thursday • Chapter 9 (all) — Test Taking Strategies • Topic Outline Worksheet

  11. Topic Outline —This is for the presentations at the end of the course • Select a topic you would like to learn more about. • Narrow this topic to something you think could be covered in a 1000 word paper. • What is the title of this potential paper? • What is the main idea (the thesis) that you want to address (remember, 1000 words is only about three pages of double spaced writing). • List three main points that would support your thesis. • Now, list three sub-points that would support your first main point. • Where would you look to develop the ideas on this paper?
