Our Goals • Articulate a vision for SRC • Propel our ideas and innovations to the community and marketplace • Develop more partnerships with industry and the community • Continue to support Ryerson graduate programs • Investigate new funding opportunities • Promote international research • Adopt an improved administrative structure, systems, and practices
Scholarly Research and Creative Activity (SRC) Scholarly Research and Creative Activity encompasses imaginative work undertaken on a systematic basis in order to increase knowledge and enrich the human experience. Contributions to SRC The Ryerson community forms a mosaic of scholarly research and creative activities, with each Faculty making an enriching and unique contribution to the whole. All Faculties support Ryerson’s SRC agenda • The Faculty of Arts contributes scholarly publications, research and social innovations • The Faculty of Communication and Design contributes to imaginative design, artwork, exhibits, and cultural innovation
Contributions to SRC (continued) • The Faculty of Community Services contributes to knowledge transfer to the community, to health and to scholarly work • The Faculty of Engineering, Architecture, and Science attracts and contributes research grants and contribute to publications, scholarly work, commercialization and knowledge transfer • The Ted Rogers School of Management contributes to innovation, knowledge transfer and social prosperity • The School of Graduate Studies continues to grow its enrolment to over 2,000 graduate students and 80 post-doctoral fellows
Creativity There are numerous examples of creative pursuits in which Ryerson University participates: • Nuit Blanche, • Toronto International Film Festival • Blackstar Collection/Exhibition • Luminato • Conferences, workshops and other contributions to cultural prosperity and SRC excellence
Funded Research • Since 2005-2006, supported research funding has risen from $12.2M to more than $19.9M, a 63% increase • The number of awards held by Ryerson faculty have increased from 336 to 366 over the same period • The rate of increase in funding is exceeding that of comparable universities.

Ryerson Gaining Ground • Ryerson is expanding its share of funding as compared to similar institutions • According to Infosource, in 2007 Ryerson was third of the top 10 fastest growing research universities in Canada • CAUBO ranks Ryerson as 30th among the top 50 research institutions, and Infosource ranks Ryerson as 31st
Ryerson Partnerships • Founding member – MaRS Innovation • New partnership with the University of Waterloo – MOU • New Media Lecture Series with University of Toronto leading to a research partnership • New partnership with St. Michael’s Hospital and George Brown College, with new collaborative research opportunities • 10 new international partnerships, 6 with institutions ranked among the top 500 worldwide

Conclusions • Ryerson has made significant gains in numerous areas: number of research awards, total amount of awards, number of post-doctoral fellows, external ranking of Ryerson’s research enterprise, etc. • This has been accomplished due to the significant contributions of all Faculties in different aspects of SRC
Vision for the Future • Significantly increase the quantity and quality of research, including external research funding, and improvement in other measures of SRC • To bring Ryerson’s research income to a total of $25M by the fiscal year 2010-2011
Research Promotion Strategies • Excellent new academic recruitment (Academic Plan) • Continued support for the Postdoctoral program • Increase in graduate student support/funding, selected undergraduate in SRC • Mentoring of new and upcoming researchers • Expand Research Infrastructure (Master Plan) • Seed funding for research in promising areas • Supporting strategic directions
