  4. March • US troops land in New Caledonia. • US forces around Manila Bay retreat to Corregidor • Douglas MacArthur arrives in Australia

  5. April • 24,000 troops on Bataan • Japanese land in New Guinea • 9 APR: Bataan falls • Bataan Death March • 60,000 – 80,000 US & Filipino POWs • Marched 80 miles • 2,600 – 16,000 die • 18 APR: Doolittle Raid

  6. May • Battle of the Coral Sea • 6 May: Corregidor surrenders • 12,000 US prisoners • GEN Houma fired for being too slow. • 27 May: Yorktown reaches Pearl Harbor • Leaves 2 days later

  7. June • 4 -5 June: Battle of Midway • 7 June: Japanese land on Attu and Kiska

  8. July • 3 July: Japanese complete occupaton of Guadalcanal. • 20 July: Japanese land at Buna-Gona and begin to move south over the Owen Stanley Range

  9. August • 7 AUG: US forces land on Guadalcanal • 8 AUG: Battle of Savo Island • Americans lose 3 cruisers, the Australians 1 • 20 AUG: Henderson Field in American hands.
