Online Discussions: Enhancing Student Engagement and Collaboration

This forum-based solution allows students in grades 10-12 to discuss journalism topics, share ideas, and peer-edit using threaded discussions, providing an interactive and teacher-controlled environment. While it doesn't take up class time, it lacks immediate response and physical interactions. All students participate, with required weekly posts and additional posts for extra points. Initial findings indicate increased engagement and active discussions both in and out of the classroom.

  1. Discussion via the internet: A Forum By Karen Peterson CEP 812 MSU

  2. Problems: • Time • Lack of Computers • Peer Editing • Discussion of Current Events • Sharing Ideas

  3. Setting: • Students: 10-12 grade, college prep • Teacher: English/Journalism • Subject Matter: Journalism (create newspaper, district newsletter, & yearbook) • Setting: Block Schedule - Meet three times per week (two 90 minute sessions, one 47 minute session)

  4. Solution: Threaded Discussion

  5. Summary • Why is this good? • Doesn’t take any class time. • Students interacting with one another. • Interactive. • Teacher Controlled. • Free.

  6. Disadvantages: • No immediate response (unless two post at the same time.) • No “Fire” in the classroom. • Lose facial/physical responses.

  7. Plan: • All students will participate. • Required to have one post per week. • Additional posts receive extra points. • Project will continue for remainder of the year. • Milestone: Students are actively discussing in and out of the classroom.

  8. Findings: • After the first post they were fantastic. • Responses included: “Did you read what he/she said.” or “Mrs. Peterson, do you agree with her?” or “Why does Taylor read ‘Royalty Monthly’?

  9. Implications: • COOL technology is possible!! • Must have a plan. • Must not replace curriculum, but add to it. • Doesn’t replace traditional classroom discussions.
