Use it or Lose it! Hebrews 4:14-5:14
Jesus is superior to the Levitical Priesthood because: • Jesus has a superior position v.14-16 • Because He is always available to us. V.14a • Because He ministers continually in Heaven while the Levitical high priest ministered on earth and could only enter the Holy of Holies once a year. V.14b • Because He ministers in Heaven, He is able to bring the ones He represents directly into the presence of God. v.14
Jesus is superior to the Levitical Priesthood because: • Jesus has a superior position v.14-16 • Because He possesses a human nature which allows Him to be sympathetic. V.14c • Because He is God, He has the power that an earthly priest does not. v.14c • Therefore, we are to attach ourselves to our confession that Jesus is the Messiah. V.14d; Heb. 3:1
Jesus is superior to the Levitical Priesthood because: • Jesus has a superior position v.14-16 • Because He has suffered along with us which makes Him sympathetic. V.15a • He suffered all the feelings of infirmities and limitations of being human. V.15b • He was tempted in all areas (lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and pride of life) just like we are but without sin. It does not mean He was tempted by every type of temptation that men do. V.15c
Jesus is superior to the Levitical Priesthood because: • Jesus has a superior position v.14-16 • Which allows us to keep drawing near to God with the freedom to speak and state our needs with confidence. V.16 • Use our High Priest, Jesus the Messiah, with confidence to appropriate grace and mercy that is available to you to get you through whatever you are going through. V.16
Jesus is superior to the Levitical Priesthood because: • Jesus is a superior priest. 5:1-10 • Jesus possesses all the prerequisites for a priest: • He is a man. A High Priest must represent man to God. v.1a (God took on a human nature to His divine nature in order to fulfill this role). His agony in Gethsemane shows His humanity. v.1, 7
He performs priestly duties. The High Priest must function by performing priestly duties. V.1b, 9-10 • His sufferings on the cross brought him to the goal of being the author of eternal salvation since He was the final effectual sacrifice. V.9a • Jesus becomes the author of eternal salvation for those who are obedient in faith. V. 9; Jn 6:29; Acts 6:7; Rom 1:5; 6:17; 10:16; 16:25-27; 2 Thes. 1:8) • The High priest order in which Jesus functions, after His death, resurrection, and ascension, is the order of Melchizedek. V.10
He is sympathetic. The High Priest must have experienced the things that the people He represents have experienced: infirmity and temptation. This allows Him to be compassionate and sympathetic. V.2, 8. • Jesus (in His humanity) learned what obedience costs by means of the things He suffered.V.8; Phil. 2:8 • This is the reason He can deal gently or without harshness with us and have compassion on us. This brings balance between apathy and excessive feeling.
Jesus the High priest has the advantage over earthly priests in that He is always pure and morally sufficient. The Levitical priest had to sacrifice for his own sins to obtain purity. • He was appointed by God. The high priest had to be appointed by God and Jesus was appointed by the Father to take this role which was associated to His resurrection. v.4-6, Psalm 2:7: 110:4.
Application: The Third Parenthetical Warning: The Danger of Failing to Progress to Maturity. 5:11-6:20 • We must resist our natural inclination of self-preservation and fidelity to oneself in the face of hardships and persecutions. • Self-preservation prevents one from living a victorious faith life centered on God.
One cannot rest at one level of spiritual maturity. We must continue to progress. • New Revelation of truth brings with it specific obligations that all believers must submit to.
When one refuses to mature due to being lazy in their hearing and failing to make practical use of the knowledge one possesses, then he or she will not be able to handle the deeper things of Biblical doctrine. He will regress and have to be re-taught. V.11-13 • The author cannot teach them spiritually mature content because of their stagnation. • They will not understand what he will say about the subject. • The Melchizedekian Order is in the category of meat and not milk.
Spiritually mature individuals will be able to teach. V.12a • This makes them unskillful in applying the Word of God to properly discern right or wrong. This opens you up to learning more. V14. • The principle then is: Use it or lose it!
