Fort Ticonderoga • (May 1775) – Ethan Allen leads Vermont Militia (Green Mountain Boys) w/ Benedict Arnold’s Connecticut militia and captured Fort Ticonderoga.
The Battle of Bunker Hill • (June 1775) Notes from previous section • (January 1776) Col. Knox brings cannons from Ticonderoga • Washington sets them up overlooking city and harbor of Boston • By March, British abandon Boston, head for Canada

Fighting in the Middle Colonies • (Summer 1776) British crush colonial army throughout New York and Pennsylvania. General Howe leads 32,000 soldiers and takes New York City • Washington masses 23,000 men, but by the Winter, he is down to 8,000. • Many troops deserted • Colonial army is ready to collapse • Congress flees Philadelphia
Battle of Trenton • Xmas night – Washington leads his army across the Delaware River. • March 9 miles to Trenton (controlled by British). • 8am, Dec. 26, Surprise attack defeats 1,000 Hessians (German mercenaries) nets Trenton and 6 cannons. • 8 days later, Washington wins again at Princeton.
The Fight for Philadelphia • (July 1777) – General Howe’s British force captures Philadelphia • (September 1777) – British win Battle of Brandywine • (October 1777) – British win at Battle of Germantown
Victory at Saratoga • As How is taking Philadelphia, General John Burgoyne devises plan to retake Fort Ticonderoga • British struggle advancing and lose 2 significant battles (These are known as the Battle of Saratoga) October 1777.
Saratoga as a turning point • Victory helped encourage French to openly back the U.S. (February, 1778 sign Treaty of Alliance) • France won’t make peace w/ Britain unless American independence is recognized • Changed British strategy – British army stayed near coast under protection of Navy and other supplies
