The 1st Battle of Bull Run Josh Deel
The 1st Battle of Bull Run took place in present day Manassas, VA on July 1, 1861. It is said to be the first major land battle in the Civil War. This conflict was sparked by a desire to take each respected capital to end the war early. The two armies clashed at Bull Run as the Union army flanked them along the NW side. The Confederate force felt outmatched by the three Union forces pushing on them. Nearing retreat, Brig. Gen. Thomas Jackson and his men stood their ground and a nearby general by the name of Barnard Bee exclaimed, “There is Jackson standing like a stone wall. Let us determine to die here, and we will conquer. Rally behind the Virginians”
The Aftermath Although the Union forces outmanned the Confederates, the capture of the Union guns marked the turning point of the battle and the Union forces would retreat towards Washington D.C. Even though the Union lost, this is seen as a key point in the Civil War. It made the Union realize the strength of the Confederacy and that winning the war would not come easy.
